For only the second time in 18 years, Superior High School hosted the Western B/C 2018 Divisional Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 3.

“We are pretty excited for the town and for our kids to showcase what we can do to our communities,” said Head Wrestling Coach, Charlie Crabb. “The Division has some of the top ranked wrestlers in the state as well at the number one ranked team.”

Crabb also predicted that it would be a very competitive weekend between the eight teams which proved to be the case when Eureka, Lincoln Co., took top honors with a team score of 209. Thompson Falls had 144; Florence-Carlton 135; St. Ignatius/Charlo 134; Superior/Alberton 105; Plains/Hot Springs 97.5; Arlee 59; and Bigfork 7.

Eureka’s Garrett Graves, who went into the tournament undefeated, kept his title and won the 182-pound bracket to advance to state with a 34-0 record. This was in addition to four teammates who also won at Divisionals, Gunner Smith, 113; Nathan Schmidt, 120; Hank Dunn, 132; Sam Johnson, 285.

Superior Athletic Director Chris Clairmont thanked all the teams who participated and said it was a great day of wrestling, “all of the kids composed themselves in ways that you would be very proud of which was an excellent representation of all of your schools.”

Crabb felt his team should have a good weekend going into the tournament, “we have been working hard all year and even though we are predominately freshman and sophomores I think we can make some noise and get a good bunch qualified for state next weekend. We have been improving and our practices have been really great all year and it’s time to finish the year off strong the next two weeks.”

During Saturday play, Clark Fork Mountain Cat, Trey Green, lost out on first place in the 170-pound class to Thompson Falls, Jase Sorenson. Cat, Mike Parkin took third in 126-pound over teammate, Wesley Buchanan. In 132-pound, Cat Hunter Haskins lost out in third place to St. Ignatius/Charlo Cole Gilleard.

Cat Isaiah Kovalsky, won third place in the 138-pound over Chance Muller from Eureka and Ryan Cahalin won fifth place in 152-pound over Thompson Falls, Dane Chojnachy. Also in fifth place, Cat Jesse Shaske won by forfeit over Thompson Falls, Sam Ostwald. At 285-pound, Evan Hall won over O’Maste Foster from Florence-Carlton for third.
